Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am a second year medical student, aspiring Pediatrician and YouTube blogger.

A desire to positively impact the lives of others while being intellectually engaged and constantly challenged has led me into study of medicine. Although medicine is not for everyone, for whom it is, it is most likely the only choice. I want to pursue a career in medicine because my love and passion for this subject rivals none and also because this is a profession which will give me the ability to help people directly and make them happier.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
GEMx’s initiative to build a global network of medical students and health professionals is a great endeavour and I would like to be a part of this operation.

I am involved in various student committees, have my own YouTube Channel and also have a good relationship with medical students and doctors across India outside of Manipal.

Apart from being able to expand and build a network, I feel that my strong communication skills and efficiency of getting any given task done can be an asset to the GEMx programme of ECFMG.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m an Indian-American who lived in California my entire life and moved to India to pursue medicine. I am currently a second year medical student in India. My decision to pursue medicine as a career was not the result of one reason but an amalgamation of various reasons. Medicine was the only profession that stretched me emotionally, mentally as well as physically by testing the limits of my compassion, stamina, discipline, memory, and determination. These constant challenges empower me, make me fearless, and cause me to fall more in love with this field every day.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a GEMx Student Ambassador allows me to facilitate and become a part of the important journey towards creating a more global community of medical professionals. As a Student Ambassador, my goal will be to encourage medical students to participate in such a global elective by explaining to them the importance of global medicine. In addition, I will be ensuring the smooth transition in and out of student electives to guarantee that the value of the experience to both the host school as well as the visiting student is maximized.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am Mostafa, a medical student from Egypt. I was raised up in an under served city in Egypt. There was this turning point in my life when my grandmother died of cancer as she was diagnosed in a very late stage. Since then, I have been dreaming of being a physician and to have the chance to improve the health care service in under-served communities. So, when I had the chance to attend medical school I didn't hesitate.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I was lucky to have two months as international scholar at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Ohio State University; this scholarship not only added to my clinical knowledge and skills but it changed the way I am thinking. So, I am interested in being a GEMx Student Ambassador to help other students at my university to find good exchange opportunities, clinical and research electives. I believe that each student should travel to explore other parts of the world and areas of medicine. Also I am interested to build bridges and meet people with different cultures and backgrounds.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
The ability to have a direct impact on one’s most valuable, yet priceless asset, health, is one of the major factors that directed me towards medicine. People are usually surrounded by great idols to look up to. Luckily, I am too. However, the one that truly impacted me was a doctor that really set the example of the kind of doctor I don’t want to be. Though he was well rounded and a high achiever, he really lacked the true definition of a doctor as a person, and not a profession.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Personally, I have come to realize that no matter how much I read and learn from books, classes, and professors, the biggest and more influential teacher is experience. Being able to go abroad and exchange programs is great exposure. Not only does it make a person well rounded, but it really manages to make the future physicians avid learners and most importantly international doctors.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Since my childhood I have been very inquisitive and consistent in pursuing the matters that interest me. I find the working of the human body fascinating, and learning medicine has been pure joy so far.

I am very close to my grandparents. The disabling nature of their chronic pain, and the comfort that I have seen able physicians provide, have motivated me to become a doctor. I want to serve, and really value this ability to help. My grandmother passing away due to pulmonary embolism has further taught me about the faith a patient places in his physician.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
If I am a GEMx ambassador I will be able to connect with minds that are in a different environment, but at a similar stage in their careers. A lot of new and different ideas will enter the room, and a global approach will be formulated which will be good for everyone.

Technology is advancing very fast worldwide. It is not possible to work in an isolated environment anymore. We need to work together and learn from each other's experience. And there can be no better platform for this than GEMx student ambassador network.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I always wanted to be a scientist, and, at the same time, help people. When I was younger, I thought medicine could be the link between both. Actually, I realized that this professional career can provide me more than I expected; the social interaction, the innovation in personal care and the possibility to disseminate knowledge makes me believe that being a doctor can change not only mine, but others’ lives.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a GEMx Student Ambassador represents for me an opportunity to improve my leadership skills and personal development. I think I can help GEMx to eliminate barriers and make more connections around the world, by engaging people to advance their perspectives.

I have always wanted to help people and I also love the science field. So medicine was an attractive option, and now I love what I do, because it is both challenging and extremely rewarding.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Doing an exchange year and working with organizing IFMSA exchanges in my university for over one year made me see all the benefits of international communication and of understanding different views on health care. That is the reason why I am really enthusiastic about internationalized medicine.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Medicine is a career that I have had in my mind for a very long time. For me, medicine will enable me to fuse my passion for science with my desire to contribute to society in a position of exceptional responsibility. It will provide me with the opportunity to research, investigate, treat diseases and help others achieve a healthy body and mind. Medicine appeals to me as a career of choice because of amazing experiences I had during my hospital attachments, a career that involves the combination of compassion, communication, teamwork, and the quest of knowledge.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
By being a GEMx Student ambassador, I know I can experience enormous enthralling experiences especially with the student ambassador network (SAN) that are not available anywhere else. I want to see the fascinating outside world and broaden my mind and while doing so I will be able to engage with a lot of people, exchanging different ideas from time to time. Finding and learning as much knowledge as I can in the hope that I will be able to bring back all the skills, experiences, and knowledge I have learnt and share them with the society.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
My name is Tey Yee Qi and I am 22 years old. I enjoy travelling. I see it as a real-life education opportunity—meeting people from different cultural backgrounds and all walks of life. I jog and bake in my free time. I choose medicine because I feel that it is a field that allows me to further develop my different traits—the science enthusiast, the compassionate humanitarian, and the life-long learner. I also believe that health care is a basic human right and I aim to help the less fortunate ones to access it.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I look forward to attaining more elective experiences. Also, I would love to attach to hospitals outside Malaysia, preferably in a developed, as well as a developing country. That way, I would be able to compare and contrast the differences in health care systems, and identify the pros and cons of the current Malaysian health care system. Furthermore, I am keen to meet health care professionals from all over the world—to exchange ideas and experiences, to build long-lasting connections. I am also very eager to share details about my beloved country and university with the rest of the medical students out there.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I was raised in Dubai, UAE. Throughout middle and high school, I had been in and out of the hospital because my dad was a CKD patient and we were waiting for a donor. The day the transplant got confirmed was the happiest day of our lives. The doctors and the donor had truly given us a new lease of life. In those years, my decision to join the medical field became concrete. I knew I wanted to do my bit in making my patients/their kin feel at least a fraction of the joy I had felt that day.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
First, I would like to thank GEMx and my college for giving me this opportunity. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of this huge worldwide network.

I absolutely love the brilliant concept and I know I want to take utmost advantage of it. Being a part of GEMx SAN will help me widen my horizons and learn more, not only in the field of medicine but also about different cultures all around the world. It will also help me enhance my leadership skills on a global level and I look forward to that.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am the eldest daughter of an engineer and teacher. Since the age of 8, my dream has been to become an obstetrician and gynaecologist. When I was about the same age, I remember my mother speaking to me about her obstetrician, and the affection with which she spoke about her was enthralling. If I am not wrong, I guess that was the first seed that was sown into my heart to choose this noble profession, which later motivated me to study well and finally put me in the right path towards my goal.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I am looking forward to being a GEMx Student Ambassador because I believe that globalization of the medical society can very much revolutionize the medical field. And I see this as the first step to link the entire medical fraternity or at the least the doctors of tomorrow. In fact, I have a multitude of ideas that I would like to share with the entire team when given the opportunity. Most of all, I think this is a wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a doctor and as a person.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I was brought up in a rural area in Southern India. As many of my family members were involved in the field of health care, I have had many worthwhile experiences being with them in a medical set-up. It was the time I was sensitized to the value of medical practice and the many options to understand the living body. I understood that this is one of the professions that teaches you to be caring, compassionate and cordial. It enables one to interact with his/her fellowmen in a meaningful way which has helped me to make the choice for medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
There is a growing concern for unity for health and I am glad that I have the opportunity to lead while I am still a student. As a GEMx student ambassador, I will be able to establish relationships that will enable me to work in partnership with the international medical community. It will open arenas for international collaborations for my Alma Mater located in a rural area for research and medical education. These interactions will go a long way in transforming me from a medical student to a responsible doctor, who will also be a statesman.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Living by the values I have been taught by my parents and the Christian school, where I studied, I am learning to consider the needs of my fellow beings. The medical profession is one that demands commitment to serve. It requires competence, effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team towards promotion of health. A health professional also needs to be a learner and should be ready to acquire new information and skills. The opportunities in the medical profession to serve others have encouraged me to pursue a career in medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
The opportunities that GEMx provides contribute to the global development of a student. Interaction with peers from other national and cultural backgrounds generates acceptance and understanding of different cultural and community perspectives. My interactions with international students have enabled me to develop communication skills, self-confidence and a greater understanding of the complexities of the world around me. As a student ambassador it will be my responsibility to share my experiences with my fellow students. I hope to support academic initiatives, promote new programs and engage members of the student community to participate in the electives.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
My name is Syafaf Humaira Aman, and I am currently a fourth year medical student from PMC. I am on a twinning programme, so I had previously done my pre-clinical years in University College Dublin, Ireland. I love travelling, playing sports, exploring new things, and at the same time I love gaining new life experiences while doing all that. I decided to pursue medicine ultimately out of my interest since I was 5 years old, especially after seeing my dad being admitted into the hospital at that time. At the same time I enjoy helping those who are in need.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a GEMx Student Ambassador would encourage me to interact more with other people, who are coming from all over the world, with different cultures and backgrounds. I believe that would definitely help my social skills, especially when I'll be dealing with all sorts of patients in the future. Being a student ambassador also would be a good reminder for me to use this rare opportunity to wisely gain as much knowledge, skills and experience as possible. I am also hoping that I could come back and emulate all of these into my practice in the future.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Why medicine? Because I love science, challenge and working with people is the primary reason I choose this career.

Moreover, medicine means no end of learning and constant improvement. I am motivated on joining research a lot mainly due to this reason itself, it helps me to discover more in the medical field.

Last but not least, I am now in my fourth year and I finally realise it is hugely rewarding to put together all the pieces of the puzzle—the history—and come out with your diagnosis; I can definitely say that medicine is the right one for me.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
First of all, I have strong interest in global educational exchange in medicine profession that developed since my study year in Dublin in which I slowly build international friendships and broaden my mind on different cultures.

Also, I am enthusiastic to share my experience as an exchange student. I have been in host family programme in USA in 2014 and the experience is fascinating.

Moreover, I believe leadership and communication skills play a big role in life. By being a student ambassador would be my step to improve my own performance and at the same time motivate the others.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
It wasn’t easy for me to decide I wanted to study medicine because journalism and business were also in my options, but I realized medicine has everything I love. Medicine is a mixture of everything that makes me, me. It has writing, speaking, investigation, biology, surgery, marketing and business to reach more patients and efficiently distribute assets, human relations, and it gives me the ability to help people who need help. Medicine gave me the possibility to use my talents to do what makes me happy, helping people, either through actual medical care or by creating campaigns and volunteering activities.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I want to represent GEMx and be the link between students around the world and my university in Chile. I believe wholeheartedly in all the benefits studying abroad can bring to a student, because I have experienced them first hand, and I want other students to have that opportunity and learn new cultures. I want to be there for students that want to take this challenge and help them in any way possible to make the transition to a different country as enjoyable as possible. I believe in GEMx and all it stands for.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m Josefa, a medical student from Chile. Since I was little, it was very clear to me that I didn’t want to work behind a desk, I wanted to do something practical, that allowed me to interact directly with people, but it wasn’t until my first year in college, in voluntary winter work, when I realized how much I loved helping people directly. Another reason why I decided to study medicine is because I love challenges, and I’m a very self-demanding person, I enjoy pushing myself to reach my limits and give 100%.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I’ve always been interested in international experiences. In 2015 I stayed in France for one month, sharing with other medical students and learning how to communicate with patients in a completely different language. I also got the chance to participate in the national social program organized by medical students in Germany, where I was able to meet medical students from all over the world. All these amazing experiences showed me how much can you learn and grow when you meet people from other countries, getting to know other cultures and getting to share yours is something extraordinary.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I was raised and taught all my life to help those who are less fortunate than I. My parents would ingrain this main principle in my life but I would only learn the full extent of it when I had finished secondary school.

At the time, I was exposed to more community work and refugee work through local church activities and such. From then onwards, I knew that I wanted to do something and help those in need. After discussion with my parents and mentors, the choice of pursuing medicine was an obvious one.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I was initially approached by my Associate Dean Prof. Vinothini to be a part of GEMx. After receiving information from her as well as from the GEMx website, I started having an interest to be a student ambassador.

I have always relished the idea of interacting with my peers from across the globe. Sharing experiences, learning new perspectives and most definitely meeting new people are things that constantly excite me. Furthermore, being an extrovert, this opportunity provided to me was appreciated.

I am a sixth year medical student in Mexico, now doing my social service at the Infectious Diseases Department of the National Cancer Institute. I am also coordinating the medical area at a children’s home where I started as a volunteer. I decided to study medicine after participating in student organizations aimed at marginalized communities in Mexico, where I saw that without the basic right to health, none of the other human rights can be achieved. I love teaching, so now I participate in an interdisciplinary student project with the purpose of enhancing health promotion education in rural settings.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m a medical student attending the fourth year at University of Pavia, Italy. I decided to pursue a career in medicine for several reasons, but the most important reason is that I just feel it. I can’t imagine being anything else but a doctor in a hospital, trying to deal with new medical cases and patients every day. There’s always more to learn, not only because each part of human body is extraordinarily interesting and not completely understood yet, but also because you will grow up every day thanks to patients’ experiences which will teach you humility, humanity and fortitude.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I would like to be GEMx Student Ambassador because I think that GEMx provides students and universities great opportunities. International exchanges are fundamental for students to discover new realities and improve their medical skills. This is why every student should know this association so that more people can enjoy the benefits provided by GEMx. Moreover I think that a reference point is very important to foreign students who will come and have to face organizational problems in a country they don’t know; as I would like to receive this help I want to do the same to incoming students too.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am a fifth year medical student in Indonesia, currently doing my clinical rotation program. I always have this blissful feeling whenever I am able to help people. I realized that by being a doctor means I can help people in need, anytime, anywhere. My passion got bigger when I enrolled the medical faculty. I witnessed people with chronic, fatal, untreatable diseases that struggle to survive. I want to be their hope, I want to be their friend, and the person to let them know that they are not alone.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I am shy and introverted person. It took a lot of thinking and brainwork for me to start and continue conversation with another party. I am aware that communication is essential for a doctor, so I want to learn and practice my communication skill. By being a GEMx Student Ambassador, I believe I can reach that goal.

GEMx itself has been a part of my medical student's life. Being an elective student and GEMx grant awardee make me feel really grateful. I want to share this experience with fellow student in my school and around the world.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am a 5th-year Rwandan medical student at the University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Sciences. I am 24 years old now. Unlike most of the medical students, I didn’t have any parental guidance to choose medicine and I had no interest in it until in my 5th year at high school when I was chosen to be in charge of the infirmary at my school. During the whole year, I was able to find out the talent in me. Since that time I have fallen in love with medicine and I like to care about others.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a student ambassador at my university is an honour. I believe that I learnt a lot from the TUFH conference in Tunisia and I feel happy to share what I learnt with students at my university. I can also facilitate students from partner schools to learn in a good environment at my university. My university is small but the good thing is that it has a good vision. I believe that being an ambassador, I can be a bridge through which students and the school can work hand in hand to reach toward global health education.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I have entered medical school in 2012 and I finished the foundation year and 3 years of medicine and I'm now in the fourth year. I have chosen medicine for two reasons: the first is because my cousin has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and I always dream to find a treatment for him. The second reason is because my aunt is a doctor and she always encourages me to be like her.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a student in year 4 who has successfully completed basic sciences and currently enrolled in clinical sciences, I will be simply able to guide students around hospitals and directing their communications with faculty in the clinical environment. In addition, I have a strong belief in GEMx goal in which they aim at sharing information not only about our medical college but also about our beloved country UAE. I believe that UAE is a country with a valued history and rich in its heritage and culture since I have lived my entire life here.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
In my upbringing I was always curious about different fields and sought experiences through university summer programs and research. My interest in medicine was fortified the summer of tenth grade, after a showing experience in the operation theatre in my home country, Egypt. My passion for medicine grew as I began to shadow in the emergency room. The culmination of my clinical experience completely shifted my plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I have had a continuously growing interest in joining different leadership opportunities that enable me to connect with other like-minded individuals around the world. I think it’s a fascinating program that opens many doors for many students, like myself, who are interested in experiencing global health and participating in research programs and opportunities.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
During high school, I went abroad on an exchange program in the US and took an anatomy and physiology class that year. I was fascinated by all the complicated processes that take place in the human body and the complexities of the human structure! This class was what introduced me to medicine.

I graduated high school but was still unsure about what exactly I wanted to do, even though I knew I loved science and biology after taking that class. But after working as a research assistant in college on a diabetes-related project, I knew medicine is what would fit my interests best!

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I see the great benefit of participating in international exchange programs and I’ve done a few myself! I wanted to promote the idea among my colleagues and help get more people involved to get the chance to experience what I’ve been through. I see such opportunities as some of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever been through! And once I heard about GEMx, I thought being an ambassador would be the best way to grow my interest in international exchange and get to connect with students across the globe!
