Global Exchange Workshop and GEMxSM at AMEE 2013

GEMx representatives will conduct a workshop on international exchange at the 40th annual conference of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE 2013), to be held August 24-28 in Prague, Czech Republic. Titled “Student Exchanges in Health Professions Education: Identifying Weaknesses and Sharing Strengths,” the workshop will identify challenges and opportunities associated with student exchange in health professions education, as well as highlight resources that can be used to facilitate exchange. GEMx Advisory Committee members William Burdick, Associate Vice President for Education, Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research; A. Mark Clarfield, Director, Medical School for International Health, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev; and Alice McGarvey, Vice Dean for Career Development, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland will serve as panelists, along with a representative from the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations.

The workshop will include a presentation by the panel as well as highly interactive small group discussions facilitated by panel members. Questions that will be addressed during the workshop include:

  • How do you judge safety in global exchange? How is student safety maintained once they are abroad?
  • How do we ensure a fair exchange between schools?
  • What measures do you use to judge the quality of a program?
  • What factors should be included in an orientation to prepare students? How would you handle breaches of ethical behavior either during or after the elective?

Faculty and especially students with an interest in exchange are highly encouraged to participate in the workshop, and to visit the ECFMG booth (booth no. 9) at AMEE 2013 to learn more about GEMx and to speak with members of the GEMx team. Information on the exact date and time for the workshop will be provided when it becomes available.
