What is the difference between the GEMx Global Network and GEMx Regional Networks?

The GEMx Global Network connects educational institutions in medicine and the health professions around the world to offer students enhanced opportunities for affordable educational exchange. The GEMx Global Network is open to individual medical schools, health care organizations, and training institutions worldwide.

GEMx Regional Networks are partnerships that GEMx has developed with established regional exchange networks to facilitate and promote student exchange among the health professions schools and institutions within those networks. Regional networks focus on improving health care for the patient populations within their regions through education, training, research, and capacity building.

For more information, please see About GEMx.

Can my school/institution join GEMxsm?

Individual schools/institutions are welcome to join the GEMx Global Network. For information about GEMx’s eligibility requirements for schools/institutions, please e-mail GEMx staff at info@gemxelectives.org.

If you are interested in joining a GEMx Regional Network, please contact the appropriate regional representative:

  • GEMx Africa: Faith Nawagi, Global Partnership Development Representative, Africa, fnawagi@gmail.com
  • GEMx Latin America: Gabriela Haydeé Moreno Corral, Global Partnership Development Representative, Latin America, gemx.americas@gmail.com
  • GEMx South East Asia: Elise Moore, MBA, Global Partnership Development Representative, Asia Pacific, gemx.asiapacific@gmail.com

How long are GEMx electives?

The exact duration of an elective is established by the institution hosting the elective. Most electives are expected to last from four to 12 weeks.

When are electives offered?

Each institution participating in GEMx establishes when its electives are offered. Institutions have the ability to offer electives throughout the year on a rolling basis through GEMx.

Are electives for other health professions offered through GEMx?

The GEMx Global Network currently offers only clinical and research educational electives, as well as observerships, for undergraduate medical students. GEMx is working to expand the Global Network beyond medicine to the other health professions and is actively exploring relationships with new institutions worldwide to offer educational exchange opportunities across the health professions.

Certain GEMx Regional Networks offer electives in other health professions. Please visit the appropriate regional network page for more information:

GEMx Africa

GEMx Latin America

Representatives of interested schools/institutions can learn more about how GEMx can meet their educational exchange needs by contacting GEMx program staff at info@gemxelectives.org.

Can individuals in postgraduate training use GEMx?

Currently, only clinical and research educational electives for undergraduate medical students are available through the GEMx Global Network. Global and public health electives as well as observerships may be offered. It is possible that GEMx will expand the Global Network to include exchange opportunities in postgraduate training in medicine and the health professions, as well as opportunities for faculty members in the future. We welcome your input and invite you to contact us at info@gemxelectives.org to discuss these possibilities.

What are the fees for schools/institutions to participate in GEMx?

If your school/institution is interested in becoming a GEMx Partner, please contact us directly at info@gemxelectives.org for more information about the annual GEMx membership fee.

What are the fees for students to use GEMx?

An important goal of GEMx is to keep the program affordable, so that as many institutions and students as possible have the opportunity to engage in elective exchanges. Currently, no fees are being charged by GEMx to students participating in the GEMx program. GEMx Partners may charge fees for tuition, accommodations, and/or other student services. GEMx requests that Partners keep these fees to a minimum to keep exchanges affordable for students, and that Partners clearly list the fees in their GEMx on-line applications.

My school/institution has existing relationships/partnerships with other institutions to offer exchange electives. How will joining GEMx affect those relationships?

A school’s or institution’s participation in GEMx does not replace any existing partnerships or partnership agreements established by the school/institution for educational exchange outside of GEMx.
