Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am a second year medical student, aspiring Pediatrician and YouTube blogger.

A desire to positively impact the lives of others while being intellectually engaged and constantly challenged has led me into study of medicine. Although medicine is not for everyone, for whom it is, it is most likely the only choice. I want to pursue a career in medicine because my love and passion for this subject rivals none and also because this is a profession which will give me the ability to help people directly and make them happier.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
GEMx’s initiative to build a global network of medical students and health professionals is a great endeavour and I would like to be a part of this operation.

I am involved in various student committees, have my own YouTube Channel and also have a good relationship with medical students and doctors across India outside of Manipal.

Apart from being able to expand and build a network, I feel that my strong communication skills and efficiency of getting any given task done can be an asset to the GEMx programme of ECFMG.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m an Indian-American who lived in California my entire life and moved to India to pursue medicine. I am currently a second year medical student in India. My decision to pursue medicine as a career was not the result of one reason but an amalgamation of various reasons. Medicine was the only profession that stretched me emotionally, mentally as well as physically by testing the limits of my compassion, stamina, discipline, memory, and determination. These constant challenges empower me, make me fearless, and cause me to fall more in love with this field every day.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a GEMx Student Ambassador allows me to facilitate and become a part of the important journey towards creating a more global community of medical professionals. As a Student Ambassador, my goal will be to encourage medical students to participate in such a global elective by explaining to them the importance of global medicine. In addition, I will be ensuring the smooth transition in and out of student electives to guarantee that the value of the experience to both the host school as well as the visiting student is maximized.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am Mostafa, a medical student from Egypt. I was raised up in an under served city in Egypt. There was this turning point in my life when my grandmother died of cancer as she was diagnosed in a very late stage. Since then, I have been dreaming of being a physician and to have the chance to improve the health care service in under-served communities. So, when I had the chance to attend medical school I didn't hesitate.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I was lucky to have two months as international scholar at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Ohio State University; this scholarship not only added to my clinical knowledge and skills but it changed the way I am thinking. So, I am interested in being a GEMx Student Ambassador to help other students at my university to find good exchange opportunities, clinical and research electives. I believe that each student should travel to explore other parts of the world and areas of medicine. Also I am interested to build bridges and meet people with different cultures and backgrounds.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
The ability to have a direct impact on one’s most valuable, yet priceless asset, health, is one of the major factors that directed me towards medicine. People are usually surrounded by great idols to look up to. Luckily, I am too. However, the one that truly impacted me was a doctor that really set the example of the kind of doctor I don’t want to be. Though he was well rounded and a high achiever, he really lacked the true definition of a doctor as a person, and not a profession.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Personally, I have come to realize that no matter how much I read and learn from books, classes, and professors, the biggest and more influential teacher is experience. Being able to go abroad and exchange programs is great exposure. Not only does it make a person well rounded, but it really manages to make the future physicians avid learners and most importantly international doctors.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I was raised in Dubai, UAE. Throughout middle and high school, I had been in and out of the hospital because my dad was a CKD patient and we were waiting for a donor. The day the transplant got confirmed was the happiest day of our lives. The doctors and the donor had truly given us a new lease of life. In those years, my decision to join the medical field became concrete. I knew I wanted to do my bit in making my patients/their kin feel at least a fraction of the joy I had felt that day.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
First, I would like to thank GEMx and my college for giving me this opportunity. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of this huge worldwide network.

I absolutely love the brilliant concept and I know I want to take utmost advantage of it. Being a part of GEMx SAN will help me widen my horizons and learn more, not only in the field of medicine but also about different cultures all around the world. It will also help me enhance my leadership skills on a global level and I look forward to that.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I was brought up in a rural area in Southern India. As many of my family members were involved in the field of health care, I have had many worthwhile experiences being with them in a medical set-up. It was the time I was sensitized to the value of medical practice and the many options to understand the living body. I understood that this is one of the professions that teaches you to be caring, compassionate and cordial. It enables one to interact with his/her fellowmen in a meaningful way which has helped me to make the choice for medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
There is a growing concern for unity for health and I am glad that I have the opportunity to lead while I am still a student. As a GEMx student ambassador, I will be able to establish relationships that will enable me to work in partnership with the international medical community. It will open arenas for international collaborations for my Alma Mater located in a rural area for research and medical education. These interactions will go a long way in transforming me from a medical student to a responsible doctor, who will also be a statesman.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Living by the values I have been taught by my parents and the Christian school, where I studied, I am learning to consider the needs of my fellow beings. The medical profession is one that demands commitment to serve. It requires competence, effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team towards promotion of health. A health professional also needs to be a learner and should be ready to acquire new information and skills. The opportunities in the medical profession to serve others have encouraged me to pursue a career in medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
The opportunities that GEMx provides contribute to the global development of a student. Interaction with peers from other national and cultural backgrounds generates acceptance and understanding of different cultural and community perspectives. My interactions with international students have enabled me to develop communication skills, self-confidence and a greater understanding of the complexities of the world around me. As a student ambassador it will be my responsibility to share my experiences with my fellow students. I hope to support academic initiatives, promote new programs and engage members of the student community to participate in the electives.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
It wasn’t easy for me to decide I wanted to study medicine because journalism and business were also in my options, but I realized medicine has everything I love. Medicine is a mixture of everything that makes me, me. It has writing, speaking, investigation, biology, surgery, marketing and business to reach more patients and efficiently distribute assets, human relations, and it gives me the ability to help people who need help. Medicine gave me the possibility to use my talents to do what makes me happy, helping people, either through actual medical care or by creating campaigns and volunteering activities.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I want to represent GEMx and be the link between students around the world and my university in Chile. I believe wholeheartedly in all the benefits studying abroad can bring to a student, because I have experienced them first hand, and I want other students to have that opportunity and learn new cultures. I want to be there for students that want to take this challenge and help them in any way possible to make the transition to a different country as enjoyable as possible. I believe in GEMx and all it stands for.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m Josefa, a medical student from Chile. Since I was little, it was very clear to me that I didn’t want to work behind a desk, I wanted to do something practical, that allowed me to interact directly with people, but it wasn’t until my first year in college, in voluntary winter work, when I realized how much I loved helping people directly. Another reason why I decided to study medicine is because I love challenges, and I’m a very self-demanding person, I enjoy pushing myself to reach my limits and give 100%.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I’ve always been interested in international experiences. In 2015 I stayed in France for one month, sharing with other medical students and learning how to communicate with patients in a completely different language. I also got the chance to participate in the national social program organized by medical students in Germany, where I was able to meet medical students from all over the world. All these amazing experiences showed me how much can you learn and grow when you meet people from other countries, getting to know other cultures and getting to share yours is something extraordinary.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
Personality wise, I see myself as a forward-looking person. There is always something that I want to do or a goal that I want to achieve and I feel that medicine matches perfectly to this trait of mine. This is because it is a broad field that never lies static.

I also like the humanitarian aspect of being a doctor. It allows you to offer so much to serve people regardless of their backgrounds.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
It is a great international platform that connects me to other medical students from different parts of the world. I believe that this is an important aspect in enhancing our experiences as medical students in terms of broadening our horizons. It will also allow me to be a great help to other students who also look forward to better their experiences.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I am a sixth year medical student in Mexico, now doing my social service at the Infectious Diseases Department of the National Cancer Institute. I am also coordinating the medical area at a children’s home where I started as a volunteer. I decided to study medicine after participating in student organizations aimed at marginalized communities in Mexico, where I saw that without the basic right to health, none of the other human rights can be achieved. I love teaching, so now I participate in an interdisciplinary student project with the purpose of enhancing health promotion education in rural settings.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I am very interested in medical education, and I believe that it should be based on interdisciplinary and international cooperation. I think that the GEMx project is an opportunity to enhance these partnerships to improve medical education around the world. I am also interested in the cultural learning opportunities that this will provide to improve our social skills among our peers and, in the future, to understand the diversity of our patients.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m José, from Colombia. I’m cheerful, kind, and a serious person. I decided to study medicine when I was 17 years old, because I just wanted to save some human lives and make people’s life better. At that time I was clear that we can not save every one’s life but I just thought that if I could save one life it would be worth all the efforts we do as students and as professionals.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I’m interested in being a Student Ambassador because I like to meet new people, I enjoy to make new friends and talk about travel experiences, because I’m also good helping people to develop in new places where I’ve been and GEMx offers this opportunity to me where I can do some of those things. So it would be a great experience because I will be doing the things I like helping other students and working for my university and GEMx.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I’m a medical student attending the fourth year at University of Pavia, Italy. I decided to pursue a career in medicine for several reasons, but the most important reason is that I just feel it. I can’t imagine being anything else but a doctor in a hospital, trying to deal with new medical cases and patients every day. There’s always more to learn, not only because each part of human body is extraordinarily interesting and not completely understood yet, but also because you will grow up every day thanks to patients’ experiences which will teach you humility, humanity and fortitude.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I would like to be GEMx Student Ambassador because I think that GEMx provides students and universities great opportunities. International exchanges are fundamental for students to discover new realities and improve their medical skills. This is why every student should know this association so that more people can enjoy the benefits provided by GEMx. Moreover I think that a reference point is very important to foreign students who will come and have to face organizational problems in a country they don’t know; as I would like to receive this help I want to do the same to incoming students too.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
I have entered medical school in 2012 and I finished the foundation year and 3 years of medicine and I'm now in the fourth year. I have chosen medicine for two reasons: the first is because my cousin has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and I always dream to find a treatment for him. The second reason is because my aunt is a doctor and she always encourages me to be like her.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
Being a student in year 4 who has successfully completed basic sciences and currently enrolled in clinical sciences, I will be simply able to guide students around hospitals and directing their communications with faculty in the clinical environment. In addition, I have a strong belief in GEMx goal in which they aim at sharing information not only about our medical college but also about our beloved country UAE. I believe that UAE is a country with a valued history and rich in its heritage and culture since I have lived my entire life here.

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career in Medicine
In my upbringing I was always curious about different fields and sought experiences through university summer programs and research. My interest in medicine was fortified the summer of tenth grade, after a showing experience in the operation theatre in my home country, Egypt. My passion for medicine grew as I began to shadow in the emergency room. The culmination of my clinical experience completely shifted my plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Why I Became a GEMx Student Ambassador
I have had a continuously growing interest in joining different leadership opportunities that enable me to connect with other like-minded individuals around the world. I think it’s a fascinating program that opens many doors for many students, like myself, who are interested in experiencing global health and participating in research programs and opportunities.
