Can I use GEMxsm?

GEMx is available to eligible students of GEMx Partner Institutions. To determine whether your school or institution is a GEMx Partner, see the list of GEMx Partners.

If your institution is not a GEMx Partner, contact an appropriate representative of your institution to request that the institution join GEMx. If you would like us to reach out directly to a representative at your institution, please fill out our convenient Institution Contact Request form.

For students of GEMx Partners, eligibility to use GEMx and to participate in an elective is at the discretion of the student’s institution. Contact your institution to determine if you are eligible to use GEMx.

How do I know if my school/institution is participating in GEMx?

My school/institution is a GEMx Partner. When can I establish a GEMx account?

You will be able to request to establish a GEMx account when your school/institution is listed in the GEMx system. If your school/institution is listed, you will be able to select it from the list of schools/institutions that appears during your on-line request to establish an account. Your institution must appear on this list in order for you to be eligible to establish an account with GEMx. In addition, your institution will need to verify your request in order for your account to be established.

My school/institution is a GEMx Partner. When can I apply for electives through GEMx?

To apply for electives through GEMx, you must first establish a GEMx account. After you have successfully established your account, your school/institution will need to verify your eligibility to apply for electives. After your eligibility is verified, you will be able to submit applications to your preferred electives.

What types of electives are available through GEMx?

Currently, clinical and research educational electives for undergraduate medical students are available through GEMx. Global and public health electives as well as observerships may also be offered. Please note, however, that GEMx is currently expanding beyond medicine to the other health professions and is actively exploring relationships with new institutions worldwide to offer educational exchange opportunities across the health professions. Please continue to monitor this website for more information.

What are the fees for students to use GEMx?

An important goal of GEMx is to keep the program affordable, so that as many institutions and students as possible have the opportunity to engage in elective exchanges. Currently, no fees are being charged by GEMx to students participating in the GEMx program. Please keep in mind that institutions may charge their own application and administrative fees which are made payable directly to the institution.

How do I get my school/institution to join GEMx?

If you would like your school or other institution to join GEMx, encourage an appropriate official at the institution to contact a GEMx staff member at info@gemxelectives.org or call us at 001 (215) 823-2288. Telephone assistance is available between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time in the United States, Monday through Friday. Are GEMx electives available year-round?

Eligible students can access GEMx year-round, and GEMx Partners have the ability to offer electives throughout the year on a rolling basis. However, each GEMx Partner establishes when its electives are available, so there may be times of the year when no electives are available.
